The Island of dolls

Mexico

Known as "La Isla de la Munecas" by the Spanish, the Island of Dolls is perhaps the most fascinating tourist attraction in Mexico. Located in the south, the island is a place of mystery and superstition. Almost every tree on the island is decorated with old mutilated dolls that give you the feeling of being constantly watched

Mexico The history of the island began in the 50s, when a certain Don Julian Santana Barrera decided to live as a hermit, leaving wife and children behind.
Shortly after his arrival on the scene, Don Julian became convinced that the island was haunted by the spirit of a little drowned girl.
To appease the ghost of the girl and protect himself from bad luck, Don Julian began collecting old abandoned dolls ( sometimes from the river where the little girl drowned ).
Santana gathered dolls on the island for nearly 50 years. They are literally covering the vegetation of the island, unfortunately, over the years , they decomposed horribly because of the effect of the sun and the rain.
Ironically, in 2001 Don Julian Santana was found dead by his nephew, in the same river in which the girl had drowned. Now his Island of Dolls is one of the most bizarre tourist attractions in the world.

The museum's exhibits include ceramics, textiles, vases, jewelry, architectural models, and an interesting collection (reputed to be the world's largest) of Inca drinking vessels (qeros) carved out of wood, many meticulously painted.
